New ‘green tech’ crane for Tilbury

A new Liebherr multifunctional crane, which incorporates several green technologies, has arrived at the Port of Tilbury. Acquired to support the growing operations of the Port, including Aggregate Industries’ new cement grinding manufacturing facility and import terminal, the LHM 550 crane is engineered to manage high-volume cargo.

Not only does the crane have an innovative energy recovery system that captures and reuses energy, reducing fuel consumption, it can operate on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, facilitating the Port’s transition to zero-emission operations in the future, the crane's electric-ready design allows for connection to an electrical power supply.

Commenting on the arrival of the new mobile harbour crane, Paul Dale, Chief Operating Officer of Forth Ports (of which the Port of Tilbury is a part) said:

“We have set out ambitious net zero targets across our business and are investing in greener technology to ensure that our operations are sustainable.

“The Liebherr LHM 550 joins our busy fleet in Tilbury and they will all support our growing bulks and heavy lift work across our port estate. We have a long-term relationship with Liebherr across the group and we are aligned in our commitment to greener operations.”

Sometimes, when weather conditions prevent our Pilots from disembarking at the Pilot stations in our district, it may be necessary to overcarry them so as not to delay the ship. The Pilotage Act 1987 states that a Pilot cannot be taken beyond their district without their consent, therefore overcarriage is voluntary.

When overcarriage is agreed the PLA’s regulations require the vessel’s Agent to facilitate the Pilot’s repatriation back to their place of work. Overcarrying simply means they stay on board the ship until it reaches its next port or an alternative pilot station outside of the Thames district.

Important updates to Notices to Mariners (NTMs)

NTM GIS map

Notices to Mariners (NTMs) give essential, up-to-date advice to support navigation and commercial shipping, and all mariners are advised to consult the full list of notices when planning their passage.

We have recently changed the way we communicate our Notices to Mariners (NTMs). Rather than posting individual notices on our Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram accounts, we now post a weekly round-up, every Friday, on those platforms.

However, you can still see all Notices to Mariners as they are issued directly on X (formerly Twitter), our WhatsApp channel, and via email subscription.

All current notices are always available on our website and mobile website, too.

We have also recently launched a Notice to Mariners GIS map, providing the latest information in a visual platform.

In November this year, the PLA will have been producing a newsletter for 100 years, so we’ll be celebrating its centenary – as you can imagine, a lot has changed since 1925.

We’d like to hear your thoughts about Tidal Thames News, and the stories we share, so we can keep improving it into its second century.

We’d really appreciate a minute of your time to fill in the survey.
