Santa on the Thames

Santa Claus took to the Thames to surprise ten young patients, their families and NHS staff from Evelina London Children’s Hospital with a festive boat ride, organised by the Port of London Authority and Uber Boat by Thames Clippers.

Arriving on his ‘sea sleigh’ (a PLA Harbour Service launch vessel adorned with tinsel and lights), Santa was carrying a huge cargo of presents, donated by DP World and Tideway.

Robin Mortimer, Chief Executive of the Port of London Authority, said, “We are thrilled to team up with Santa to bring the children of Evelina out onto the River Thames, and to support Evelina London Children’s Charity this Christmas.

“As the UK’s biggest port, bringing in essential products and presents from across the world, the Port of London helps deliver Christmas for people in London and across the country each year.”

Every year, Evelina London cares for more than 104,000 children and young people across its dedicated children's hospital and community sites.

Sue Pruden, Play Service Manager of Evelina’s therapeutic play service, said: “In hospital, families don’t often have the opportunity to spend time together. Experiences like this, that the whole family can enjoy and create memories together, are especially invaluable at Christmas time.

“We are so grateful to the Port of London Authority, Thames Clipper and Evelina London Children’s Charity for making this magical day happen. We care for children from across the South East and UK and, for some of them, this is their first time seeing the sights of the city.”

Active Thames held an event (10 December) to bring partners together to discuss social value and the impact it has in the sports sector.

To date, Active Thames, the partnership programme led by the PLA that promotes the development of watersports on the tidal Thames and inland waterways in London, Kent and Essex, has supported 56 community and sports groups with £430,000 of funding. It is focused on improving access, diversity, and inclusion, while raising awareness of the benefits of physical activity in blue spaces.

Speakers included Will Watt, Founder/Director of State of Life, a social enterprise that helps organisations measure and value their wellbeing impacts; Sian Palmer-Ferry, Community Development Manager at Canal and River Trust;, Jamie Langstone, Sector and Partnership Manager at Southend’s Council for Voluntary Services (SAVS); and Terri Calbraith, Strategic Partnerships Manager at Poplar HARCA, a resident-led organisation that invests in community projects. Participants at the event gave very positive feedback, reporting that they would be able to apply the learnings and insights in their own work.

Santas Run the River

SITC22

Three thousand people, dressed as Santa, took to the streets of London for the annual event ‘Santa in the City’, raising funds for over 50 charities.

The 4.5 km evening run, which began near St Paul’s Cathedral, saw a mass of Santas run along both sides of the Thames, crossing the river at Southwark Bridge and Millennium Bridge, passing iconic London landmarks on the way.

Don’t Boat and Booze

This Christmas we will be supporting the Metropolitan Police Service annual ‘Christmas Drink – Drive’ campaign.

This high-profile campaign highlights the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs – a message that applies equally to the river as well as the roads, as the safety of vessels, passengers and crews is of paramount importance.
