Laburnum Boat Club hosted the first Active Thames Coaching Observation session (22 August) marking a significant step in fostering a stronger coaching community along the Thames.
This session, open to young people aged 9-18, showcased the inclusive, mixed-ability approach Laburnum has established, with around 30% of participants having disabilities such as autism or down syndrome.
Ben Burchell, of Danson Park Adventures, spoke about the value of these peer-to-peer observation sessions: “I find it a useful tool to be able to get to other clubs and see how sessions are run both by the club and the individual coaches. This allows me to develop my own coaching by seeing new techniques, games, and different venues, as well as seeing what we can adapt and run at our own centre.”
The Clean Thames Challenge kicked off on 1st September as part of the Totally Thames Festival. Over 100 participants have committed to tackling litter along the foreshore or the Thames Path National Trail.
PLA’s Emily McLean, Technical Advisor, Water Quality said: “It’s so exciting to see people so passionate about keeping the rubbish out of the tidal Thames. We’d like to thank everyone who’s taking part in the challenge, alongside volunteers who are regularly on the foreshore to battle the plastic that ends up in the river.”
The Challenge is taking place all this month and encourages people to visit the foreshore to collect rubbish.
Previously closed to the public, a new part of the riverside walk between Hammersmith and Putney, has been opened as part of Fulham Football Club’s reconstruction of their stadium, Craven Cottage.
This means that, for the first time ever, it’s possible to walk along the north side of the Thames between Putney and Hammersmith bridges without once having to leave the riverside. The only catch is that the football club can close the path on match day to use it solely for people entering the stadium.
