A new initiative designed to encourage people from London, Kent and Essex to act against litter along the tidal River Thames has been launched. The PLA’s Clean Thames Challenge, running throughout September, invites individuals and groups to participate in a variety of ways, all with the shared goal of improving the health of the Thames.
By taking part, you're not just picking up rubbish – you're becoming a guardian of the Thames, protecting the fish, birds, and aquatic plants that rely on its clean waters to thrive. The challenge is also an invitation to reconnect with the outdoors, to breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun on your face, and rediscover the simple joy of being active by the water.
If you are quick to get on board, you’ll get a special delivery – your very own Clean Thames kit! With a bright yellow vest and a trusty litter picker, transform into an eco-hero, ready to take on the tide of trash in your choice of location. But don't wait too long, kits are first-come, first served and won't last forever.
Throughout September, seize every opportunity to snatch up stray bottles, snag plastic bags, and rescue rogue wrappers from the clutches of the river. Remember, every piece of litter removed is a victory for the Thames, its wildlife, and the community that cherishes it.
Whether you're a seasoned clean-up pro or simply looking for a new way to give back to your community, the Clean Thames Challenge offers a meaningful and accessible opportunity to make a difference.
Upon completion of the challenge (and submission of the Clean Thames Challenge Litter Survey) participants will be entered into a prize draw. You could win a kayaking trip for two with London Kayak Company, or a Stand Up Paddleboarding trip for two with Active360.
Sign up today and be part of the solution for a cleaner, healthier Thames.
